On Saturday morning, July 28, 1945, the pilot of an B-25 bomber intending to land New York City’s LaGuardia Airport got disoriented in thick fog.

He ended up crashing the plane between the 78th and 80th floors of the Empire State Building, killing all of the plane’s crew and 11 workers inside the building. Dozens more were injured.

One of the wounded workers was elevator operator Betty Lou Oliver, who at the time of the crash was operating on the same levels. During rescue operations as she was being lowered down, the elevator’s cables snapped and she plummeted 75 stories into the building’s basement.

Nevertheless she was somehow able to survive and attained a Guinness World Record in the process for longest survived elevator fall.

Just two days later most of the building was open and running as usual for work on Monday.

Keighty Alexander: Color by #’s

We recently heard from Brooklyn artist Keighty Alexander–a talented individual who is working on an interesting interactive/collaborative/installation piece called Color By #’s. Given her background working with internet sourced material, it’s interesting to note that her interactive/social works are not free from spam. And that her openness to public input creates an unusual environment where spam is welcome and is also considered to be a part of the finished work of art.

Tomorrow marks the 100th anniversary of the day civil rights organizer Bayard Rustin was born. It’s a milestone in and of itself, but little occasion’s needed to remember the visionary organizer and activist.

Rustin was a master strategist who all but created the model of post-World War II nonviolent social movements in the U.S. He championed nonviolent tactics and introduced the Gandhian protest tactics that would become one of the hallmarks of the Civil Rights Movement. He’s best known for organizing the March on Washington in 1963, after which he was anointed the title of “Socrates” of the Civil Rights Movement.

From the outset of his life, Rustin seemed destined for a life fighting inequity around him. He was raised with Quaker schooling by his grandmother Julia Rustin who also happened to be a founding member of the local Pennsylvania chapter of the NAACP. He was radicalized in the 1930s after the prosecution of the Scottsboro boys, nine black youth who had been falsely charged with raping a white woman in Alabama. Later, he’d join the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters to protest discrimination in the military and then went on to found the Congress of Racial Equality, challenging bus segregation with civil disobedience a full decade before Rosa Parks would be arrested for doing the same. He later resisted the draft as a conscientious objector, and was imprisoned for his commitment to pacifism.

As a black gay man, he was often sidelined, kept from having a larger public profile. Others worried his sexuality was a liability for the movement. It never kept him from being a tireless activist and organizer, and to this day, his writing and words offer many important lessons for the fight for justice in the 21st century.

As Rustin once said, ”God does not require us to achieve any of the good tasks that humanity must pursue. What God requires of us is that we not stop trying.”

Won’t be forced to wear a skirt at 2012 London Olympic Games

I was thrilled when I heard that the Olympics were adding female boxing to the games this year. I thought some equality had finally been achieved for these female athletes. I was saddened when I heard about a proposal that would require female competitors to box in skirts as gender-specific uniforms only reinforce gender stereotypes and sexism.

We’re glad to hear today that 55,000 people (Karousel staff participated) signed Eli Plank’s petition. As a result, the President of the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA) has publicly stated that female boxers will not be forced to wear skirts during the Olympic Games.

After hearing the announcement Eli said “I sincerely thank every single person who signed, supported and shared the petition. If I could, I would give each and every one of you an individual high-five.”

And for the women who are claiming that skirts are more comfortable and athletically advantageous—we see through your argument. Just come out and say that you’d like to feminize the sport as much as possible so that you feel girlier while beating the crap out of another women.
